Abingdon Branch History

The Abingdon Branch opened to great fanfare on May 17, 2004. Situated on a 15.2-acre site, the library is interconnected to the surrounding community. Sidewalks join the library to the school next door and to the local neighborhoods. The grounds include wooded areas, walking paths, picnic tables and a pond with overlooking wooden dock.

In the Spring of 2009, a community playground was added to the property and is maintained by the Harford County Department of Parks and Recreation. 2010 saw the addition of a rain garden installed by the Harford County Department of Public Work. The garden, featuring native plants, is designed to capture and absorb the water runoff from our roof. We have hosted several workshops in partnership with the water resource staff to introduce rain gardens to the community and encourage homeowners to create their own.

Since its opening day, the library has been embraced by the local community quickly becoming the second busiest in the county. The library features drive-thru window service and five self-checkout machines. We also feature individual study rooms for varying size groups. A large public meeting room and a smaller conference room are available for rent by profit and non-profit groups.

In the Fall of 2013, a 3D printer was introduced to the community through a series of programs and hands on experiences. This opportunity was brought to us by a grant secured by a local APG engineer. In January 2015, the Innovation Lab launched to great success. The Innovation Lab is brought to us with support from Rosedale Federal Savings and Loan Association and the Friends of the Abingdon Library. It features a variety of technologies including 3D printers, iMac desktop computers and PC laptops, audio and video recording equipment with a green screen.

The second phase of the Innovation Lab launched in late 2017 with the addition of an HTC Vive Virtual Reality System and a Carvey desktop CNC (computer numerical control) Router.
